Benefits of Lemon


We all use lemons in our daily cooking. Did you know this wonder fruit.. yes 'fruit',  has numerous benefits. First of all, let's make ourselves clear that lemon is a fruit and not a vegetable.

Now this fruit can be used right from we start our day. The health benefits of lemon are due to its many nourishing elements like Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, copper, iron,magnesium,potassium, zinc, phosphorus, and protein. Lemon is a fruit that contains flavonoids, which are composites that contain antioxidant and cancer fighting properties. It helps to prevent diabetes, constipation, high blood pressure, fever, indigestion and many other problems, as well as improving the skin, hair, and teeth. Studies conducted at the American Urological Association highlight the fact that lemonade or lemon juice can eliminate the occurrence of kidney stones by forming urinary citrate, which prevents the formation of crystals. 

Lemon has a many culinary uses. Be its juice, rind and zest all are variedly used. 

Lemon juice is used to make lemonades, cocktails and drinks. It acts as a great tastemaker when added as a marinade. Apart from all these, its juice is used a great natural preservative on fruits that turn brown after being sliced such as apple, banana and avocados.

Lemon rind on the other hand is a great flavour enhancer when added to jams, marmalades, lemon curd. My baker enthusiasts would agree me that lemon zest added to some of the baked goodies make them heavenly.

So, with all these lemon benefits why not enjoy this fruit heartily. And don't forget this proverb "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade".
